When soloing, we tend to think about the key of the song, match the scale we need to use, and off we go. However, the problem is that the chords keep changing from one to the next, while we continue to focus solely on the main key we are in. As a result, our solos can become disconnected from the song, and we stop making music.

Everyone who wants to solo on the guitar learns the 'most famous of all' scale shapes: the minor pentatonic shape. It's a great scale because it sounds fantastic, is easy to play, and allows you to sound like you're improvising right away. What many people do not know is how to progress beyond the first shape they learn.

There is a very simple technique that can take your solos to the next level: the Octave technique. The guitar is built in such a way that whatever you play in one octave, you can easily reproduce in a higher or lower octave, almost in the exact same way.

When soloing, as guitarists it is very easy for us to fall into the temptation of just running through scales without any logical thought behind. Guitar is a very shape based instrument. We have shapes of chords, triads, of scales… all we have to do is to move them around the frets and we’ll have a different key.
